Flawless

We live in an imperfect world where many strive for perfection in relationships, academics, careers, finances, and physical appearance - to name a few.  We may find ourselves down a dangerous road to perfection, especially when comparing ourselves to others.  When we recognize we are all flawed in some way, we may slow down on our path to perfection.  But what ultimately drives us down this path? Shame, for one.


What is shame? In The Gifts of Imperfection (2010), Brene Brown defines shame as "the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging." Shame tells us that we are not good or not good enough. It picks away at our self image and self esteem, driving us to seek a 'worthy' image that is usually unrealistic - or at the very least, untrue.


The Bible often describes God's way and His words as flawless.  And while we don't measure up to the perfection of God, there's a certain amount of beauty amidst flaws in each of us; where we can find truth in the passage Song of Songs chapter 4 verse 7 -


You are altogether beautiful...there is no flaw in you. 


Here, the encouragement is not that we are unflawed, but rather we are still beautiful with our flaws.  The passage is speaking to the beautiful overshadowing the flaw. 


How can we overcome the shame of our flaws? Psalm 34:4-5 encourages us this way:

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.


To get past the 'race to perfection', we must know that it isn't the best path for us.  Instead, we must follow the path that lays our insecurities at God's feet by seeking Him who can soothe our fears of imperfection. Only He can exchange our fear and shame with radiance as we gaze upon Him, replacing our insecurities with assurance of the beauty He's placed in each of us.


The result is the beauty and freedom of living flawlessly, even with flaws.
